The Sin You Are Covering (Proverbs 28:13)

Proverbs 28:13 says, ' He that covers his sins shall not prosper but whoso confess and forsake them shall have mercy.''

David's sin in 2 Samuel 11 to 2 Samuel 12 was adultery which was punishable by death in Leviticus 20:10. In connection with sin, there is always an unforeseen element that the sinner does not take into consideration that would expose the sin he thought had been perfected, requiring another sin to cover it up.

David did not know that Uriah would not go to his house to sleep with his wife Bathsheba. He had thought to use Uriah's visit to conceal his adultery. A second sin is required to conceal an earlier sin. David conceived of another plan to get Uriah drunk supposing that in a state of drunkenness, he would go home to his wife. The plan failed again to cover up his sin with Bathsheba. Making a man drunk is sin.

David became desperate and the only option he considered to be available was to plot the murder of Uriah and to use a means to make it look legal. He used his nephew Joab, the Army Commander to organize how Uriah would be killed in battle.

David may have thought to satisfy his passion by having sex with Bathsheba but never considered that she would become pregnant. He did not have the intention to kill her husband and take her over but when she became pregnant, his involvement could not be concealed so he opted for murder.

His first sin was adultery (2 Samuel 11:4-5)
His second sin was deception to cover up the first sin (2 Samuel 11:6-11)
His third sin was making Uriah drunk (2 Samuel 11:12-13)
His fourth sin was plotting the murder of Uriah to cover up the first sin (2 Samuel 11:14-15)
His fifth sin was his hardness of heart (2 Samuel 11:22-27), thinking that the sin had been effectively buried but he did not reckon that God would react to it. He quickly married Bathsheba after her 7 days of mourning to conceal the pregnancy.
The sin which King David legalised, God called it by its proper name, MURDER!

Power to overcome sin

Lord Jesus, cleanse me from my sins with your Blood ( 1 John 1:6-7)

Lord Jesus Christ, cleanse me from every filthiness of the flesh and spirit ( 2 Corinthians 7:1)

Spirit of discernment to discern an appearance of sin and the power to flee all appearances of sin, rest upon me in Jesus name ( 1 Thessalonians 5:22)

Power of God to bear and to overcome temptations, rest upon me in Jesus name ( 1 Corinthians 10:13)

Anything in my life that can take me to Hell, Lord Jesus by your mercy, uproot it out of my life ( Matthew 15:13)

Spirit of Egypt and the Spirit of Sodom operating in me, be cast out in Jesus name.

Lord, keep me also from presumptuous sinning and let sin not have dominion over me, then I shall be upright and be free from the great transgression in Jesus name ( Psalm 19:13)

Sinning is a Choice

Text: Romans 6:13-14

A Christian is not expected to be committing willful sin after coming to the knowledge of the truth, because Jesus came to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). If a Christian has truly repented and converted from darkness to light, then the old things must pass away from his life (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Purity and holiness are possible by the power of the Holy Spirit(Galatians 5:16). A Christian can determine not to commit sin and keep himself pure for God. Some of the biblical examples are:

Ø Daniel in Daniel 1:8 purposed in his heart that he will not defile himself with the King’s meat.

Ø In Genesis 39:10, Potiphar’s wife tempted Joseph day by day but he hearkened not unto her. The temptation was continuous but he determined not to sin against God and he did not.

Ø Job made a covenant that he would not lust after a woman (Job 31:1)

Ø David in Psalm 17:3 took a decision not to allow his mouth to transgress.

Many Christians are yet to come to the reality that they cannot be a servant of Satan and sin on one hand and also be a servant of Christ and righteousness at the same time (Romans 6:13-14). We cannot serve God and Mammon together (Matthew 6:24).

Living a holy life before God starts with taking a firm decision to avoid the unclean things (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).  In addition, fleeing all appearances of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22), through praying (Psalm 19:13) and abiding by Galatians 5:16.

Holiness is possible by the power of the Holy Spirit. Do not be deceived by the lie of the devil that holiness is not possible. That lie is one of the doctrines of the Devil being circulated in this Last Day Church. If Daniel and Joseph were holy and righteous in the Old Testament, why cannot we achieve same in the New Testament?

Let us pray:

Ø Lord Jesus, deliver me from what is right in my own eyes (Judges 21:25) & empower me to do what is right in your eyes (Deuteronomy 6:18).

Ø Lord Jesus, give me a new heart that will hunger and thirst for righteousness (Deuteronomy 30:6)

Ø Lord Jesus, deliver me from presumptuous sinning and let not sin have dominion over me (Psalm 19:13)
