Are You a
Living Sermon?
For many
years, many a Christian have been hearing sermons on holiness through preachers
on the pulpit; through teachers during bible studies and Sunday School lessons;
through TV evangelists and many other channels. It is being said that people are no
more interested in hearing sermons or reading the bible, but are more
interested in seeing a practical application of the Gospel in the lives of men.
The whole gospel program is based upon a voluntary obedience to the Word of
God.
Are you a
living sermon on holiness? Is your Christian life a practical application of
the gospel of Jesus Christ? Do people around you see you as a model on holiness
worthy of emulation? If the answers to these questions are in the negative,
then what credibility do you have as a Christian? The credibility of a true
Christian is based on his life as much as on his lips. Both go together.
It is not
enough to merely profess that you are a Christian while your life is not in
right standing with the Word. Matthew 7:21 says, ‘not every one that saith unto
me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven: but he that doeth the
will of my father which is in heaven.’ It is not sufficient to confess Jesus
Christ on your lips while your heart is far from Him (Matthew 15:7). It is not
adequate to be worshiping God with your lips while your heart is steeped in
wickedness (Mark 7:19-21).
If, since
you became a Christian your light is not shining before men, evidenced by good
works, then your Christianity remains mere lip service. Matthew 5:16 says, ‘let
your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify
your Father which is in heaven.’’ Therefore, it is imperative that good works
must reflect in your Christian life – dressing, speech, business activities,
relationships and other areas.
Though we are saved by faith in Christ
(Ephesians 2:8-9), our Christian life is justified by its good works and not by
faith alone. Faith in Christ without good works following it is dead faith
(James 2:20; 26). Faith in Christ and good works go together to make you a
credible Christian.
If good
works are not automatically following your confession of Christ as Lord and
Saviour; if you claim to be a born-again Christian but committing sin either in
the open or in secret, then you are not yet a living sermon on holiness. You have a role to play in your salvation, go and fulfill your part. Make amendment today!
Now, what is
holiness?
Holiness is a total separation from anything that is unclean (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). It is doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord, God (Deuteronomy 6:18). Holiness is a consecration of oneself to holy uses and purposes.
